Frederick Cable Oechsner papers, 1883-1968.

This collection consists of personal and professional papers of Frederick Cable Oechsner. Included are manuscripts and typescripts of writings by F. C. Oechsner and others, drawings, photographs, dispatches, diplomas, newspaper clippings and other printed items. The photographs primarily concern F. C. Oechsner's foreign assignments during the 1940s and 1950s, but family photographs include several of earlier New Orleans Carnival scenes, such as the Court of Rex in 1924. Manuscripts are included by other individuals, namely James Boardman Cable, Kinne Cable Williamson, and Gertrude Duby Blom. An original sketch of F. C. Oechsner, by William Sprating, is included in the collection.

Spratling studied architecture at Alabama Polytechnic Institute (now Auburn University), 1917-1921. He designed the university seal that, with minor changes, is still in use; he also taught drafting at API. Frederick Cable Oechsner (1902-1992), born in New Orleans, was educated at Tulane University as a lawyer, but instead became a journalist, consul, intelligence official, and author. He was the son of prominent New Orleans physician John Frederick Oechsner (1868-1926) and Caroline Kinne Cable Oechsner (d. 1963). His mother was a niece of Louisiana writer, George Washington Cable.
